A Kate Shugak Investigation, Vol. 13

Alaska State Trooper Jim Chopin approached Kate Shugak, a resourceful woman living in the Park, to assist him in investigating the murder of Len Dreyer, a local handyman. Len's frozen body had been discovered in the path of a receding glacier, with a fatal shotgun wound to his chest. Surprisingly, no one had noticed that Len had been missing for months.

Though Len was a well-known handyman for hire in the area, little was actually known about him, including by Kate Shugak herself. Kate had been planning to ask Len to help build a small second cabin on her property. Now, with Len's mysterious death, Trooper Chopin sought Kate's help in uncovering Len's background, hoping to uncover a motive for his murder.

Accepting the case, Kate was mindful of the need for gainful employment as she cared for Johnny, the teenage boy under her guardianship. Little did she realize that in trying to provide for Johnny, she might end up putting him in harm's way.
